Student Visas: Study in the U.S.
Student visas allow foreign nationals to study in the U.S. as a full-time student or in language training programs. There are two categories of student visas: F-1 and M1.
F-1 visas allows a person to enter the U.S. as a full-time student at an approved academic institution in a program that leads to degree or certificate. M-1 visas are available for those enrolling in vocational programs. These are the requirements to qualify:
- You must be enrolled in an “academic” educational program, a language-training program, or a vocational program
- Your school must be approved by the Student and Exchange Visitors Program, Immigration & Customs Enforcement
- You must be enrolled as a full-time student at the institution
- You must be proficient in English or be enrolled in courses leading to English proficiency
- You must have sufficient funds available for self-support during the entire proposed course of study
- You must maintain a residence abroad which you have no intention of giving up.
F-1 students may not work while in the program but may accept certain types of on-campus employment. M-1 students can engage in practical training after graduation.
F-1 and M-1 students may bring their wife and children but these dependents will not be able to work while in the U.S.
