Applying for Asylum
Asylum may be granted to those who come to the U.S. to flee persecution on the basis of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or for being part of a particular social group. Those seeking asylum must demonstrate a well-founded fear they would suffer persecution if they return to their home countries.
Those who qualify for asylum are permitted to stay in the U.S. and work, including their wife and children under 21 years old. One may apply for asylum when arriving in the United States or after being in the country up to one year (exceptions may apply).
