Become a U.S. Citizen

There are 3 ways to obtain U.S. citizenship:

  • By birth. One is automatically a U.S. citizen if born in the United states or if born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent if certain conditions apply;
  • Meeting the requirements of the Child Citizenship Act. child may automatically become a citizen but obtaining a citizenship certificate is recommended.
  • A process in which non-citizens can become U.S. citizens.

One may qualify for naturalization of he or she has been a permanent resident (green card) for 5 years or if he or she has been a permanent resident for 3 years is a spouse of a U.S. Citizen.

To become a U.S. citizen one must be 18 years old, show good moral character, meet residency requirements, be able to read and write English and pass an American civics test.
